Political Cartoon Worksheet

 EDITORIAL CARTOON ANALYSIS

1. What is the event or issue that inspired the cartoon?
        -The man is reading the newspaper, and there is a bunch of holes in the paper. He asks his wife to let him read the paper first before she cuts the coupons out.

2. Are there any real people or places in the cartoon? If not, what images are portrayed in the cartoon?
     -No real people in this cartoon. The image is a man and a woman in a house. You see the man sitting in the chair, and you see the woman standing right beside him.

3. Identify the specific artistic techniques used in the cartoon (i.e., symbolism, analogy, exaggeration, labeling, and irony). What is the artist trying to show the reader by using these techniques?
    -Symbolism-The symbol is the man and woman in the picture. Also the paper symbolized that there were coupons in the paper until the woman cut them out.
     -Analogy-The analogy is the man and woman saving money by using coupons as apose to people who don't use coupons to save money.
    -Exaggeration-The exaggeration is the number of coupons clipped out of the newspaper.
    -Labeling-The are no labels in this picture.
    -Irony-The irony is that the picture is trying to make you think about saving money by using coupons.
    -The artist is trying to show people that you can save money by using coupons.

4. What is the cartoonist's point of view about the topic portrayed in the cartoon? Give examples to support your interpretation.

   -The point of view is that saving money by using coupons is a good thing to do. They show that by the man reading the newspaper and seeing all in holes in it. It also shows it by him asking his wife to wait till after he reads it, and then she can cut them out.

5. Is this cartoon persuasive? Explain why or why not.

      -I think that it is persuasive by showing us that there are people who still use coupons today, and that it helps when it comes to saving money.

6. What other techniques could the artist have used to make this cartoon more persuasive?
      -The artist could of had the woman say something like, "I can't wait because I only have so long until the coupons expire."

Best and Worst Web Quest Our Group Discussed

The Best
Grow School Greens-it was creative and it allowed them to work in groups
We All Scream for Ice Cream-it allowed the students to really work together in their groups.

The Worst
Where is my hero?-it felt like the students were working individually and not in groups.
Ancient Egypt Web Quest-it did not have a lot of pictures, and it did not have a lot of color in it so it made it look like a boring project.

WebQuest	Strengths	Weaknesses
Grow School Greens	This project is good because it asks some good questions for people to find out about vegetables.	I feel that this could be more of individual work because each person can pick a different vegetable, and answer the questions. The group may not come together to reflect on what they found out.
Where is My Hero?	This project is good because it has the groups discuss their finding with each other.	Yet again each group member gets an individual hero to find information on.
Underground Railroad	The group discussion part is good. I really like this project that they picked for students to do.	This project seems to be more of an individual project.
Ice Cream	This is a really good project because it has the groups work together on this project. They do not have an individual task; except for filling out the worksheet individually, but that is only to evaluate each person. It is also used to make sure each person is doing the work.	I would have to say that there are absolutely no weaknesses on this project.
Ancient Egypt	This is a really good project because it has the groups work together; not individually.	I thought that the instructions could be a little better for the students to understand it.

3 thing I learned

1. Teaching is very messy.
2. Teaching is always about something. The video uses the example 'content' meaning the material that teachers teach their students.
3. I learned that "quality of teaching is  the transformation of content". That basically means that teachers take the information and transform it in a way that students will understand the information.

I like this video. I really liked that one person was talking, and the other was texting information to the screen. Some of the information was really funny, and it made the presentation interesting to watch.

Scratch Cards
The two scratch cards I used were the change color and the interactive whirl.

For me, this project was a little hard because I couldn't figure out how to make everything work. Now that I have my scratch project complete; I really do like it. I would recommend my students using this scratch project because it would help them show who they are in a creative way. It would also show me that they have an understanding of how to use a project like this. It was fun once I figured out how to make everything work.
